Is it jazz or Brazilian music? Brazilian Jazz or Popular Brazilian Music (MPB - as it is called in Brazil)? Afinidade (Affinity), released by Eldorado Records, is an album, which enters the category ‘almost impossible to identify’. It is at the threshold of definitions, at the border of pattern-defining styles. The musical direction and arrangements of Pichu Borrelli lead the way to a freedom full of surprises. They are conventions worked in pre and post recording up to the point of almost being able to feel the sweat of each song.   The repertoire plays the role of brasilidade (pure Brazilian essence), even when the thinking is in jazz. Ciranda, baião and samba always bring the unforeseeable. One of the special guests is the leader of Take 6, Mark Kibble. Cibele and Mark sing the duet of 'Love Dance / Lembrança' (Ivan Lins and Gilson Peranzzetta, Paul Williams and Vitor Martins). Filó Machado appears in Vatapá (Léa Freire and Joyce Moreno).The whole web is sewn by piano and bass silks, acoustic and electric, with drums, wind and percussion. It is a record, as they say, organic.   American drummer Lewis Nash conducts the song Blue Note (by Filó Machado and Fátima Guedes), which also has Roberto Sion’s clarinet and Sizão Machado’s bass. Guitarist Natan Marques appears in Coisas da Vida (Milton Nascimento and Fernando Brant) next to kora n'goni by Carlinhos Antunes. The accordion of Toninho Ferragutti is in Amado (Rafael and Rita Altério), the first recording of this song, while flautist Léa Freire appears in Rio Amazonas (Dori Caymmi and Paulo Cesar Pinheiro). Pianist Michel Freidenson plays organ B4 alogside the saxophone of Wilson Teixeira in the track Mamãe Natureza (Rita Lee).
